Just the other day, I had to do a rather embarrassing Google search. “Difference between lettering and calligraphy,” I typed in. I found a plethora of websites, begging to explain to me the difference between the two genres of typography.
I learned that the main difference is that of drawing vs. writing. From the ILoveTypography link that I just shared, I found another interesting website: Lettering vs. Calligraphy. The site compares different letters and words that are lettered, or written using calligraphy. The vivid examples made the difference more clear to me. In my opinion, lettering looks more like something you’d find installed on your computer as a font. It also looks like it’s more of something you would find created digitally, although that might just be this website. Calligraphy certainly appears to be more hand-drawn.
I prefer the look of lettering, at least in this case. Which do you prefer?
